Dr Uzoezie, NOCEN Provost Rounds Up Most Colourful Convocation To Mark Her Exit

Early next year, Dr Ego Uzoezie, Provost of the Nwafor Orizu College of Education will be concluding her tenure in the institution.

Uzoezie, a former commissioner under Governor Peter Obi, a soft talker, but a hard worker last weekend gave the college what can be described as the most colourful convocation in the history of the institution.


With guests from far and wide, Uzoezie attracted heads of other tertuary institutions, top government functionaries in Anaqmbra state, including the Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano, business mogul, Chief Cletus Ibeto, who is also the chairman of the college's governoirng council, and fiery cleric, and Bishop of Sokoto Catholic diocese, Bishop Hassan Kukak.

Testimonies of her push, which has also transformed the institution was given by almost all the visitor who gave goodwill messages at the even.

What is even more heartwarming is her resolve to bring back the pride of the teaching profession by training the best teachers in the country.

To this end, she has joined the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano in pushing for the conversion of the college into a university of education. below is the full srory.

Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano has stated that his government has started a strong push for the conversion of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe to a University of Education.

The governor said this is part of his resolve to strengthen teacher education as every country is as good as its teacher. He said the University of Education would be better equipped to train teachers.

The governor who was at the college during its 17th convocation at the weekend said education is a priority in his government, and for his government to succeed in education, it must ensure that teachers are well prepared for the challenges of the profession.

Represented by the commissioner for Education, Prof Kate Omenugha, Obiano said, “I am myself a son of a teacher, and I know what it means for our society to have good teachers.

“We want the best for this institution, and I am very happy that recently, 25 courses have been accredited in the college. You may recall that the first thing I did on ascending to office was to set up a visitation panel for this college, and I think that made it possible for the accreditations,” Obiano said.

Earlier, the Chairman governing council of the college, Chief Cletus Ibeto thanked the governor for increasing the college’s subvention, and the recent provision of N80millon as bailout funds for the college.

Meanwhile, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah who delivered the college's 17th convocation lecture regretted that the pride of the teaching profession was fast being eroded.

Represented by Rev Fr Prof Peter Tanko, Kukah who spoke on contemporary challenges and prospects of teacher education in Nigeria, blamed the challenges facing the teaching profession partly on government, saying that lack of motivation is the real reason teaching is no longer prestigious.

He said, "Perhaps an even greater dislocation has occurred in the psyche of the contemporary Nigerian teacher, whose morale is now very low.

"The senseless politicization of education at all levels, the gross neglect of education in the allocation of funds and shabby treatment of teachers of all cadre have combines to rob education and the teaching profession of its pride."
